Your Junior Year Musical Theatre Checklist: A Season-by-Season Guide
The start of junior year can come with a lot of questions. Are you thinking about college? What do you want to study? When are you taking the ACT or SAT? And if you're planning to pursue Musical Theatre, it can feel like you need all the answers right now — especially once you've watched a friend go through the process or have fallen down the TikTok rabbit hole of college audition content. 😬
Here's the truth: there's no need to have it all figured out on day one. Junior year isn't about rushing to the finish line — it's about building a solid foundation, one season at a time. Below is a simple, doable checklist to help you make the most of this year, without the overwhelm.
Fall of Junior Year
Start exploring programs. Start a running list of schools that interest you. As you research, keep a few questions in mind:
What type of degree are you looking for — BFA, BA, or BM?
Conservatory-style training or a liberal arts experience?
What kind of university environment fits you — location, size, campus culture?
Dive deep into program websites: read faculty bios, look into the curriculum, see what shows they are producing, and check out the program's social media to get a feel for real student life.
Tip: Start slow. Pick a few schools a week rather than trying to research everything at once. Software like Stage Ready is a wonderful resource for building and organizing your list — parents can even make their own alongside you.
Summer program deadlines. If a summer intensive is on your radar, start researching options and noting audition deadlines now.
Start exploring material. You don't need finalized repertoire yet — you're going to grow a lot this year, and the songs that feel right in the fall may not be the ones you land on by summer. But it's the perfect time to get familiar with rep, especially pre-1970s musical theatre. So many students feel unsure in the Golden Age genre simply because they haven't spent time in it yet. Open up a playlist and start digging — there are some real gems in there.
Keep training. Voice lessons, dance classes, acting coaching, your school's fall show, choir — this is the year to keep building your skills and staying consistent.
Winter of Junior Year
Submit summer program materials. If you're applying to a summer intensive, make sure your videos and applications are in by the deadlines.
Keep training and researching. Continue building your skills, and keep exploring schools and repertoire as your list starts to take shape.
Start lining up your support team. Whether that's your voice teacher, a mentor, a coach, or a program like ours — having the right people around you before you head into spring and summer makes the rest of the process feel a lot more manageable.
Spring of Junior Year
Consider visiting schools — IF it makes sense for you. If your spring break allows for it (and it fits your schedule and budget), a visit can help you get a feel for a campus and its faculty. But hear us clearly: you do not have to visit before you apply. There are plenty of ways to get a sense of a program without setting foot on campus — and some students prefer to save visits for after they're accepted, so they don't fall for a school that may not end up being the right fit.
Lock in your team. Head into summer with your coaches, teachers, and support system confirmed.
Narrow your list. It doesn't need to be final, but aim to head into summer with a general sense of where you're applying. A good starting range is 12–15 schools, or 12–18 if you're applying solely to BFA programs. The goal isn't a huge list for the sake of it — it's a diversified one, with a real mix of programs you're genuinely excited about. And remember: Look BEYOND the “name” or those “top 10 lists”. So many fabulous programs have great training, faculty, and industry connections that you may not know about yet.
Keep exploring rep. Which songs and characters do you keep coming back to? What stories do you resonate with? If you're working with a coach, knowing what you love will make the repertoire selection process much smoother.
Kick off your coaching. Our program starts at the end of May, right as junior year wraps up — and that's intentional. Summer is the sweet spot for college prep: your rep stays fresh instead of overrehearsed, and it reflects exactly where you are as a performer right now. Doing the deep work over the summer also means you can walk into senior year with your pre-screens and applications ready early, and a lot less weight on your shoulders.
